The Bêtises de Cambrai is the famous specialty of the town of Cambrai situated in Northern France. These candies are also famous beyond the Northern region, even in Japan where they are called French Cancan. Nobody really knows when the candy was born. The word “bêtise” in French means “a mistake” and the legend says that the candy name comes from a mistake made by an apprentice confectioner in the middle of the 19th century. This mistake turned out to be a blessing as the apprentice had invented one of the most famous candies in France!
Others will say that the candy name “bêtise” comes from the big flea market that happened on the 24th of each month in the town of Cambrai. At the end of the market, a candy was given to those who wandered and spent their money on small often useless items commonly referred to as “bêtise”. Whatever its origin might be the Bêtise became very successful right away as Cambrai was a mine region where breathing diseases were common and mint was known for its antiseptic and refreshing qualities.
